Your Mission

As a Group Lead for Avionics Mechanical Design, you will be responsible for leading a team of engineers to support design projects across multiple programs.  The scope of the avionics mechanical engineering team includes flight avionics hardware, wire harnesses, enclosures, and instrumentation.  The vehicles in the Space Flight System fleet include Spaceship 2 (VSS Unity), Spaceship 3 (VSS Imagine/Inspire), Spaceship Delta and Mothership (VMS Eve).  The design project responsibilities include developing initial requirements through design, manufacturing, test, and sustainment.  You will be leading a team creating innovative designs that meet our demanding requirements.  You will be joining a high-caliber group that works in a fast-paced environment.  Prototyping, hands-on design, and working directly with technicians and on the vehicle is standard practice.  You will be coordinating with multiple groups including structural integrity, systems, structures, production control, pilots, and supply chain. 



  • Provide direction and leadership in the execution of the group’s projects from requirements through design, manufacturing, test, and sustainment
  • Conduct detailed design reviews and drawing checks to ensure quality engineering
  • Author mechanical design documents such as requirements documents and design standards
  • Manage project schedule and cost as well as technical performance
  • Responsible for Material Review Board (MRB) investigations and dispositions
  • Present design reviews and change requests to program leadership
  • Perform trade studies of multiple solutions to present to program leadership
  • Implement process improvement initiatives

What you bring

  • 8+ years of experience working with Avionics enclosures, cockpit instrument panels, support structures, and electrical wire harness routing
  • 2+ years of mechanical design leadership including project management, leading design reviews, and training new engineers
  • Relevant mechanical design & manufacturing experience in aerospace
  • Experience with CNC machined parts, sheet metal, and composite layups
  • Experience with 3D modelling & drafting in Catia V5
  • Experience with GD&T
  • Experience with material and part selection
  • Experience with stress calculations
  • Experience with electrical schematics and wiring is a plus
  • Experience with vehicle instrumentation for flight test is a plus
  • Experience with composite vehicles is a plus
  • Experience with schematics in Microsoft Visio is a plus
  • Must have a B.S. Engineering degree from an accredited university
