Your Mission

Virgin Galactic is seeking a, highly qualified Program Business Director to manage a Team of Business Managers and Schedulers / Planners supporting programs and projects through the various stages in their life cycle.   This includes new product development, vehicle fabrication, assembly, test, vehicle modification, and sustainment activities.  The Program Business Director will work closely with project / program managers and business managers to develop, maintain, and execute project plans and leading change management for scope, budget, and schedule.  This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, talented individual with proven hands-on program business .


  • Coach, attract, develop, mentor, performance manage and retain high-performing Program Business Manager and Scheduler / Planner professionals to ensure Virgin Galactic is ready to support existing and future projects.
  • Build a coherent, collaborative, and engaged business leadership team where team members support each other in a matrixed environment ensuring consistent application of process/policy while being accountable to the programs they support enabling cross-functional program team environment. Identify succession plans for all key leadership positions.
  • Build and grow the business management team as required to support Virgin Galactic’s portfolio of current and future programs. Identify rotations for business staff that enhance their professional development.
  • Lead by example through Virgin Galactic’s values, in straight-up way which fosters transparent and open communication about both the business management team performance and program performance with timely transparency on issues.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and execution of an Earned Value Management System (EVMS) including validating the alignment of program plans to the established Work Breakdown Structure.
  • Develop and implement fit-for-purpose business management department processes to ensure consistent, high-quality work product that produces timely and accurate reporting of aligned key performance indicators. Lead business management team to perform quality control audits and analysis to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper usage of engineering technical and other data for critical path, risk, structure, trend and Earned Value analysis.  
  • Work with key company departments including Finance and IT to develop and ensure appropriate, timely and accurate program information is available to stakeholders in simple user-friendly program reporting templates.
  • Establishes and manages a sound program lifecycle management system/process for all relevant program data, analysis, models, proper Program Reviews, Change Control Board, cause of change logs and naming conventions.   Lead Business team to ensure Change Control Processes collect and correlate all requested changes (scope/cost/schedule) and determine if material changes have occurred on programs with timely summary reports to be provided to the Program Management team for assessment and executive leadership team for visibility
  • Coordinate and communicate regularly with program team to establish and document program business requirements and executive leadership to ensure individual program needs are being met.
  • Lead Business Management team to develop with the program team and present for approval program budgets (labor, material, other direct costs, and capital) to executive leadership. Provide timely variance reporting to the program team for assessment and to executive leadership for awareness.
  • Interact and coordinate across a variety of program functional organizations such as engineering, procurement, production, operations, quality control, chief engineers, supply chain, and finance.
  • Lead business management team on the preparation of schedule what-if analyses to support program decision making providing the delta analysis to the program management and executive leadership for review and assessment.


What you bring

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team of program business professionals
  • Experience leading a program team in a matrixed organizational environment with demonstrated success in supporting and ensuring program and business goals are successfully achieved.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of program management principles, tools and procedures for measuring project/program success, and risk management.
  • Experience establishing program business infrastructure, tools, and processes
  • Advanced knowledge regarding the effective development and integration of schedule and cost in an EVMS environment
  • Experience with products built during the planning processes [e.g., IMP, IMS, Product Breakdown Structure (PBS), Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Organizational Breakdown Structure (OBS)]
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and empower a team of subject matter experts in varying technical disciplines.
  • Ability to collaborate with the program teams to establish and implement program business policies/procedures and tools to provide visibility to program performance during the implementation of EVMS
  • Strong facilitation skills and the ability to proactively communicate with all levels of management
  • Ability to motivate and influence others, build effective interpersonal relationships, and be able to foster and contribute to a positive and productive team environment
  • Proficiency with MS Office and MS Project.
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning system and the integration of program plans with the financial structure.
