The Spaceship Company (TSC) is an affiliate of Virgin Galactic as a space-system manufacturing organization. Headquartered at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, it is building and testing a fleet of WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceships that, together, form Virgin Galactic’s human spaceflight system. Who You Are

TSC is seeking an Aerodynamics Engineer with experience in flight vehicle performance, stability and control analysis, flight test, and wind tunnel testing. This experience should include test plan development, post test data analysis, authoring test plans and formal reports. The purpose of this role will be to support the review and understanding of the aircraft configuration, performance, and handling qualities of the WK2 and SS2 vehicles and assist in the identification of any needed aerodynamic modifications to support entry into commercial service.

Your Mission

  • Reviews, updates, and compiles aerodynamic data for application by other engineering disciplines and flight operations
  • Develops standardized analysis and reporting tools
  • Supports flight test execution by providing vehicle performance and handling quality estimates and limitations to support development and ongoing updates to the Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH)
  • Conducts post flight data analysis and provides updates to improve aerodynamic modeling, including inputs for flight simulation development and improvements

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution
  • A minimum of 3 to 5+ years relevant industry experience
  • Academic and professional experience in sub-sonic, transonic, and supersonic aerodynamics, performance, and flying qualities
  • Experience in the use of MATLAB and SIMULINK for 6 DOF simulator development
  • Experience with the design of flight vehicles or vehicle systems to a set of requirements or standards such as CFR 14, Part 400, Part 23 and 25, military or NASA are highly desired 
  • Pilot and aircraft homebuilding experience a strong plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent computer skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Applicants must be “U.S. persons” as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
