Position Summary
Virgin Galactic (VG) is seeking an incredibly talented, energetic, and experienced Facilities Maintenance Assistant (FMA) to join our facilities team. The ideal candidate will be an experienced general assistant that will be helping the Facilities Maintenance Technicians with the cleaning and upkeep of our facilities. The FMA’s primary responsibility will be to provide custodial care for the facilities and will assist in the following areas but is not limited to: basic carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, or associated work on VG facilities using hand and power tools as directed and will troubleshoot equipment or facilities problems and report to the Gateway Facilities Manager.  They must be a self-starter, project oriented, able to assess needs, implement strategies, and quickly produce results with a high attention to detail.  Prior experience in a fast-paced start-up environment is beneficial. This role will be based in Las Cruces, New Mexico with daily work occurring at Spaceport America. Any candidate who applies for this role must be willing to relocate on their own to Las Cruces, New Mexico or the surrounding area if they do not currently live in Las Cruces or the surrounding area. 



Your Mission

  • Primarily this role will have an emphasis on the cleaning and upkeep of the Virgin Galactic Facilities.
  • Follow preventive maintenance procedures on all plant equipment in a timely and thorough manner; logging all activities routinely in the electronic facility maintenance log.
  • Participate in planning, ordering, installing and training for new equipment.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and perform diagnostics on damaged or malfunctioning equipment; make repairs where necessary or recommend to the Facilities Manager to arrange for outside supplier to service equipment.
  • Respond immediately to emergency situations (fire, evacuation, power and equipment failure, etc.)
  • Comply with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency and company directives as relates to building operations and practice safe work habits.
  • Assists with performing basic carpentry, mechanical, plumbing and painting of facilities.
  • Operates company vehicles and equipment including but not limited to forklifts, aerial lifts, trucks, trailers, floor scrubbers etc.
  • Performs general cleaning of the offices, restrooms, meeting rooms and other spaces in and around the Virgin facilities.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Provides assistance to subcontractors or other work groups as needed.

What you bring

  • 2+ years of related work experience.
  • General custodial and facility maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to accurately follow operation manuals, manufacturing and installation instructions, sketches, blueprints and diagrams. Excellent attention to detail.
  • Able to successfully keep multiple tasks running simultaneously.
  • Must be comfortable working in confined spaces.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, customer service, & problem solving skills.
  • Able to provide constructive feedback and creative solutions to problems.
  • Responsible, flexible and fast learner.
  • Willing to learn new skills and grow within the company.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and social communication skills. Demonstrated experience with meeting and dealing with people at all levels of the organization in an efficient and tactful manner.
  • Creative problem solver and able to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • A current vehicle license in good standing.
  • Excellent computer skills, prior computerized maintenance system operation preferred.
  • Must be willing to work at a remote location.
  • Self-starter, ability to work alone or with minimal supervision.


  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in the aerospace industry would be a plus.

Physical and/or Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and overtime as required. Start and stop times may be flexible.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and be able to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted and occasionally lift and move 50+ lbs.
  • Must be able to work at heights of 20 feet or more.

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen., lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
