Position Summary (Main Purpose of the Role)

Virgin Galactic (VG) is seeking a Tool Control Technician to support our Spaceline Tech Ops department.  The candidate must have a desire to learn something new, show enthusiasm for the new space industry and be able to mix aerospace enthusiasm and experience with Spaceline maintenance development.  This is a full-time position in Las Cruces, New Mexico and working at Spaceport America in New Mexico. All candidates who apply must be willing to relocate to Las Cruces, New Mexico if they do not currently live in the local or surrounding area. 



Your Mission

  • The Tool Control Technician has responsibility of assisting in oversight of the VG Tool Control Program, ensuring training, support, and participant compliance.
  • Responsible for the inspection, inventory, and processing of tools and tool kits per company policies prior to making available for issue.  
  • Verifies and updates calibration information in tracking system as applicable per company policies.
  • Inspects, identifies, and removes unserviceable tooling from workspaces.  Arranges for repair or replacements as necessary.
  • Assist departments with tooling selection, procurements, and program policies.
  • Assisting in administration of tooling software and technology, managing tool status, personnel adds/terms and permissions.
  • Perform minor preventative and corrective maintenance measures on tooling, tool kits, and storage locations.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area at all times, free of dirt, clutter, and debris.  Both gear and workspace are to maintain a “show room” standard
  • Additional duties as assigned.

What you bring

  • Minimum of 2 years mechanical or tooling experience, aviation experience strongly preferred.  
  • Minimum of 1 years in inventory control role with proven ability to safely and effectively manage tooling or other relevant assets.
  • Must have and be able to maintain a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record that will pass the criteria set by our insurance carrier for on the job coverage.
  • Sound ability to interpret printed or electronic maintenance manuals.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally to support operational needs.


Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Has ability to learn and become proficient on new and/or customized equipment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management.
  • Displays sound judgment, with the ability to make accurate and timely decisions.
  • Must possess strong motivational, organizational, interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Sound ability to interpret printed or electronic maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to adapt to paperless environment, using tablets to receive and record maintenance tasks via MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations) software.
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced start-up environment.

Physical and/or Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Must be able to travel 25% or more of the time and/or be on call as needed.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours min.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces- 3+ hours min.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted). 


ITAR Requirements

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
