The Spaceship Company (TSC) is an affiliate of Virgin Galactic as a space-system manufacturing organization. Headquartered at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, it is building and testing a fleet of WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceships that, together, form Virgin Galactic’s human spaceflight system. Who You Are

TSC is seeking an engineering manager with experience in the testing of hybrid propulsion systems to lead a team of test engineers. Significant experience with liquid or solid propulsion systems would also be considered. Ideal candidates would have experience working from high level system test requirements to develop test plans, concepts of operations, budgets and schedules that the candidate maintained responsibility for throughout the entire development and qualification process. In addition experience with flight hardware, component qualification/substantiation, motor fabrication and casting, material testing, rocket motor qualification and acceptance testing is a plus. Candidate will also be comfortable working in a hands on environment, and must have a strong sense of accountability.

Your Mission

  • Test and qualify the next generation hybrid rocket propulsion systems for SpaceShipTwo and beyond
  • Use your skills in project planning, scheduling and execution to lead a diverse team of engineers and technicians in the testing of many different systems to support the design and development of propulsion systems
  • Provide detailed testing reviews and reports with appropriate data analysis and interpretation that will help guide the development and design of these systems

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 10+ years relevant industry experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Rocket Motor / Engine Testing
  • Knowledge of the principles of combustion/propulsion
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics/dynamics principles
  • Experience with testing and qualification of propulsion systems
  • Ability to analyze and size fluid systems
  • Experience with the safe use of Nitrous Oxide (N2O) preferred
  • Familiar with the operation of electromechanical and pneumatic valves
  • Experience with developing test plans and procedures
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, data acquisition, control and basic electronics
  • Familiar with measurement uncertainty and error estimation
  • Knowledge of industrial and lab safety best practices
  • Excellent organizational, communication and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of earned-value management principles
  • Strong computer skills including LabVIEW, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Applicants must be U.S. persons as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).
