The Spaceship Company (TSC) is an affiliate of Virgin Galactic as a space-system manufacturing organization. Headquartered at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, it is building and testing a fleet of WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceships that, together, form Virgin Galactic’s human spaceflight system. Who You Are

TSC is seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer with a solid background in hazard management to join TSC’s team. This engineer will be responsible to identify hazards and develop control strategies for WhiteKnight2 (WK2) and SpaceShip2 (SS2) programs. 

Your Mission

  • Work with project engineering to identify hazards related to vehicle structural and system design, software development, operational risks, procedural deficiencies, test specific hazards, and human interface hazards
  • Develop hazard management processes to control and mitigate known hazards
  • Develop processes to aid in the identification of new hazards
  • Track hazard evolution and establish processes for periodic and triggered reverification of hazard controls
  • Detailed knowledge of hazard rating and ranking methods
  • Present and provide status of hazards and control strategies at engineering reviews
  • Knowledge of the interrelationship of the various Reliability, Maintainability and Safety analysis techniques preferred
  • Experience with one of the following software: Windchill Quality Solutions (formerly RELEX), FaultTree+, Reliasoft, or CAFTA preferred
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical engineering drawings, to include schematics, wiring diagrams and assembly drawings
  • Provide technical support and risk advice to production, maintenance management, and technical personnel
  • Experience with the system safety methods of ARP4761 or MIL-STD-882, with emphasis on hazard mitigation processes
  • Knowledge of software development practices and design assurance methods such as DO-178 or ARP4754 preferred
  • Knowledge of electronic hardware design assurance methods such as DO-254 preferred
  • Experience with Built-In-Test and its application to RMS preferred
  • Knowledge of FAA commercial space regulations preferred, particularly CFR §400.
  • Strong statistical analysis skills preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or related scientific field
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of the use and application of aviation technical data such as engineering drawings
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent problem resolution skills
  • Team player with excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision, adaptable to changing environments, and able to handle multiple tasks and/or projects simultaneously
  • Must be a “U.S. person” as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
