    Who you are

    Virgin Galactic (VG) is seeking an Associate General Counsel to work alongside our General Counsel and serve as a business-oriented corporate attorney. Strong experience in commercial transactions, especially contract drafting and negotiation, and privacy law, to include the GDPR, is required. You will be a member of a small but mighty Legal & Compliance team. You must be a creative thinker, an effective writer and negotiator, and a passionate advocate for our business. You will work with smart, dedicated professionals who are building a world-changing business and who will value your legal guidance and input. You will have the opportunity to grow and stretch your skills as our business grows. Work experience in the aerospace or aviation industry and in government contracts would be helpful but is not required. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.

     

    Location: This is a full-time position in Las Cruces, New Mexico with travel as necessary to Spaceport America, New Mexico; Mojave, California; and other locations.

    Your Mission

    Your primary responsibility will be to draft and negotiate non-standard agreements and provisions, with support from our paralegal, legal assistant, and supply chain department. You will also assist with general corporate matters in the Legal & Compliance Department. We engage in many commercial transactions with suppliers, technology development partners, sponsors, and engineering service providers. None of these transactions are “standard”, and we operate at a fast pace.

    • Provide legal review and guidance regarding various contract documents (including teaming, non-disclosure, independent contractor, subcontractor, and vendor agreements)
    • Identify, draft, and negotiate significant/unique contract requirements, special provisions, and terms and conditions with clients, subcontractors, and vendors
    • Coordinate and monitor the contract process from document preparation through execution, including interface with subcontractors and vendors
    • Draft and negotiate contract modifications and amendments
    • Assist in the identification, development, and implementation of new contract policies and processes
    • Prepare and disseminate information throughout the company regarding contract status, compliance, modifications, deviations, negotiations, and termination
    • Lead the Privacy Committee and help ensure compliance with privacy law, including the GDPR, and the implementation of best practices
    • Help Virgin Galactic do our part to make the world a better place
    • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    What you bring

    • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, with strong academic credentials
    • Current membership in the State Bar of New Mexico
    • At least 7 years’ relevant commercial/transactional experience in a high-caliber law firm and/or comparable corporate environment
    • Experience drafting and negotiating a broad range of commercial contracts, including contracts for business development, procurement, marketing, technology development, confidentiality agreements, services, and software licensing
    • Demonstrated knowledge of international contract terms, ITAR, EAR, and other applicable regulations
    • Substantial knowledge of privacy law, including the GDPR
    • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
    • A “can do” attitude with a commitment to helping the business compliantly achieve its goals
    • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness and a good sense of humor
    • Drive, motivation, and commitment to improvement
    • Demonstrated ability to: (i) identify and raise salient issues, (ii) draft language and propose various strategies that take into account relevant strategic or business goals, and (iii) communicate issues, risks and solutions clearly and concisely to lawyers and non-lawyers alike
    • A willingness to learn the technical, market, and customer objectives of our business, in order to provide business-oriented legal advice.
    • Strong knowledge of the federal acquisition process, government contracting principles, and governing regulations (including FAR/DFAR) is preferred
    • The ability to be reliable, responsive, and accountable and to take initiative
    • Strong social, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
    • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and assignments simultaneously, without significant direct supervision from a senior attorney, and still meet high quality and timeliness standards
    • Sound judgment and a commitment to ethical conduct
    • Passion for space exploration, and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space

    ITAR Requirements

    To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen., lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
