Who you are

Virgin Galactic is seeking a Commercial Development Manager, to support our mission to be the world’s first commercial spaceline. In parallel to the test flight programme, work is underway on all fronts to ensure our Future Astronauts and commercial plans are ready for the start of commercial service. The Commercial Development Manager will be central to this effort, and this is an exciting and one-off chance to be involved in the development and delivery of key strategic commercial projects for Virgin Galactic.

 

The role will be based in the Astronaut Office, as part of the wider Commercial team, and report to the Head of the Astronaut Office. It is based at Virgin’s London (Paddington) HQ but will require regular travel to Virgin Galactic’s US locations (California, New Mexico and Washington DC).

Your Mission

  • Take ownership of key projects in the lead up to commercial service, largely related to Future Astronaut readiness to fly and commercial revenue streams. 
  • Apply strategic thinking and analysis to the challenges and opportunities. Develop a plan to tackle these in line with the business objectives and priorities. 
  • Build out a plan to deliver on these, and work with the dedicated Project Manager to put in place a logical structure for successful delivery with clear workstreams and timelines. 
  • Lead on the execution phase of these projects, by coordinating the necessary teams and driving through the necessary actions on time, in budget and in line with the original objectives. 
  • Where needed, support external contract negotiations or mediate internal discussions. 
  • Work closely with the Commercial and Finance teams to understand the business model, map out the commercial revenue opportunities and be the ‘go to’ person in the Commercial team for the numbers.
  • Coordinate with teams across Virgin Galactic to factor in operational or other considerations, and keep them engaged and informed through the project lifecycle. 
  • Create materials to be used for internal and external discussions. Combine quantative and qualitative information in a clear format. Attend relevant meetings and support as needed with discussions.
  • Prepare materials for Board discussion on commercial projects. Update our investors on an adhoc basis and coordinate with Virgin Group as needed.
  • As a small team still in start-up mode, expect to get involved in all number of projects big and small in addition to the above and outside the role scope. There is a lot to do!

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree at a minimum.
  • Trained to think strategically, look analytically and execute logically
  • Over 5 years working in strategy consulting, or in a business development / financial environment with evidence of origination, analysis and execution of new business and contract negotiations. 
  • Time spent within an operational business and/or entrepreneurial environment also highly valued as a way to demonstrate hands on industry experience. 
  • Strong trained skills. Ability to think strategically, spot gaps, find information, and conduct analytical work to support sound decision making. Includes financial modelling and experience in budgeting. 
  • Well-organised with excellent project management skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills. Ability to work credibly with senior team members and to form strong personal relationships, both internally and externally. 
  • Presents findings verbally and in writing (incl. PowerPoint, Word, emails) in a logical, crisp and well thought through manner.
  • Ability to view decisions objectively, carefully and accurately to weigh up different options and perspectives. Creative and resourceful problem solving skills.

Skills & Personal Requirements

  • Experience working with a globally dispersed team comprised of multiple professional backgrounds desirable. A willingness to work outside normal office hours, and with multiple time zones
  • History of personal commitment to, and enjoyment from, participating in team-based activities. Track record of being open, collaborative, dependable, and supportive in the long term interests of the team.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated, does not hesitate to “roll up their sleeves” to get job done
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative manner with multiple teams and to work credibly with senior managers.
  • Innovates and demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit, thinking “outside the box” and generating creative ideas/ ways to develop attractive financial/ human/ brand returns.
  • Anticipates potential future issues; determines and takes steps to avert them. Seeks help/ escalates where appropriate.
