The Spaceship Company (TSC) is an affiliate of Virgin Galactic as a space-system manufacturing organization. Headquartered at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, it is building and testing a fleet of WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceships that, together, form Virgin Galactic’s human spaceflight system. Who you are

TSC is seeking an experienced Director Supply Chain to develop and lead the TSC procurement and sourcing team. This person will direct the strategic sourcing activities with an aim to provide significant supply chain value for the company and continually improve the organization as a result. This team is responsible for the negotiation of long term agreements for our WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) and SpaceShipTwo (SS2) vehicles and other programs as they arise. Individual must have a strategic vision to negotiate with key suppliers to support composite aircraft and spacecraft manufacturing organization. A strong background in aerospace is essential.


Your Mission

  • Develop and Manage all company-wide strategic sourcing, cost saving, cost avoidance, and value enhancement initiatives associated with long term agreements. This includes mentoring and supporting strategic sourcing team members in sourcing activities that include developing requirements, life cycle and market analysis, creating solicitations, reviewing proposals, organizing negotiation strategies, and leading negotiations.
  • Work closely with technical supply engineers, production, and engineering to support strategic sourcing activities.
  • Develop and manage key strategic supplier relationships and monitor supplier quality and key performance indicators.
  • Determine gaps and opportunities for training, resources, and tools for the strategic sourcing team.
  • Identify barriers to strategic supplier successful performance and provide potential solutions for their removal.
  • Develop customer facing metrics to measure and improve strategic sourcing activities.
  • Lead all aspects of the Subcontract process including generation of Non-disclosure Agreements, Requests For Proposals/Quotes, proposal evaluations, source selections, negotiations, file documentation, change management, dispute resolution and subcontract close-out.
  • Track authorizations, correspondence, revisions, and contractual deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain detailed and organized contract files, including all correspondences, changes, amendments, clarifications, and schedules.
  • Proactively administer contracts, modifications through contract closeout in close coordination with the program team, and ensure contract management activities and maintenance of accurate and complete contract files and records are conducted in accordance with company policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Monitor subcontract compliance with program schedule as outlined in contract and pro-actively identify and resolve non-compliances as required.

What you bring

Professional Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of supply chain and contract management and/or procurement experience is a requirement; At least 3 years’ experience in aerospace or technical management is required.
  • Proven experience developing procurement teams, managing agreements, and experience in a start-up environment is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills in supply chain risk management & program planning
  • Ability to read, negotiate, and develop legally binding agreements.
  • Strong computer skills, use of MS office suite and major brand MRP/ERP systems is required (Oracle preferred)
  • Understanding of import/export processes including ITAR.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, as well as certifications/associations from recognized supply chain related avenues (CPM, CPM, CPIM, etc.)

  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background within the aerospace or related industry and has effectively negotiated strategic agreements with relevant material suppliers to provide the lowest total cost of ownership.
  • Demonstrated experience developing processes and procedures with operation personnel to continuously improve productivity.
  • This person will possess strong, high-level analytical, organizational, facilitation, sourcing, and negotiation skills along with the ability to positively influence others.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and establish consensus within a group or team environment. Ability to establish and build relationships across all levels and functions of the organization required.
  • Leads by example and is happy to be hands on and work closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Extensive sourcing experience in the aerospace industry is strongly preferred.
  • Prior demonstrated supervisory, management, and leadership skills.
  • Very good knowledge of Oracle EBS, other ERP software, and/or maintenance software packages.
  • Excellent communication skills within their own team, management, and suppliers.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and structured approach.
  • Incredible energy and passion with a resourceful attitude.
  • Self-motivated. Ability to react to change and thrive in a fast paced start-up environment.
  • Flexible and adaptable.


ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
