Who you are
The Spaceship Company (TSC) is seeking an experienced Conceptual Structural Engineer who is proficient in aircraft conceptual and preliminary structural design, layout, and sizing. The position is within the fast paced and wide reaching Advanced Design team. Familiarity, and willingness to learn, with all speed regimes (subsonic, supersonic, hypersonic) and vehicle configurations (general aviation, fighters, helicopters, spacecraft) is highly recommended. Ultimately responsible for providing initial program direction on structures with appropriate level of fidelity and manufacturing considerations in mind.

Your Mission

  • Plays an integral role in all structural designs for the Advanced Design team
  • Perform aircraft conceptual and preliminary structural design and analysis
  • Perform trade studies (weight, performance, structural sizing)
  • Coordinate with the structural design and stress analyst teams on guidance of proper analysis methods.
  • Reviews, updates, and compiles engineering analytical definition of structural components and assemblies for a variety of projects
  • Supports development of manufacturing plans and procedures to ensure compliance with design and loads requirements
  • Supports the creation of structural test plans which will be used to verify manufacturing
  • Perform customer presentations, engineering reports, specifications and proposal writing

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with a concentration in a relevant Engineering discipline
  • Prefer 7+ years of experience in aircraft conceptual and preliminary design
  • Experience in aircraft or spacecraft composite fabrication, design, and analysis processes
  • CAD experience (CATIA V5 and/or SolidWorks) is preferred
  • Knowledge of composites manufacturing -- hands-on experience with composites part fabrication and assembly processes a plus.
  • Experience in the analysis of structural systems using strength of materials and finite element based methods
  • Experience with free-body diagrams and classical stress analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of composite structural analysis and sizing using classical and finite element methods
  • Experience with composite finite element modeling including pre and post processing of NASTRAN models -- proficiency in FEMAP a plus
  • Pilot, aircraft homebuilding and rapid prototyping experience a strong plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills
  • Strong team player
  • Excels in a fast past environment with loosely defined interesting problems
  • Excellent computer skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
